presentation 2 Reflection- Daniela Ponce

 Daniela Ponce

This time my group was the last group to present and the waiting make me very nervous but I enjoyed listening to everyone's presentations. Each group had two days to present. My group theme was economy and racial divides linked to chapters 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8. We really enjoyed sharing ideas and helping each other in the group. Alejandra and I did chapter 6. We learned that

We tend to listen passively when we aren’t really interested or when we are multi-tasking.

There are different ways of listening and process of approaching.

We tend to assign a sort of worth to the conversation. If it’s not worth much to us we tend to not genuinely listen to the person.

The chapter talks about listening strategies

Examples of effective and ineffective speech critiques

  • In chapter 6 we also see that most people tend to have anxiety during a conversation. Research found that social media has been found to be good source where humans can communicate and listen to each other without feeling that anxiety. The different ways we approach depend on each individual and their personality. This chapter helps you with techniques to improve your ability to remember information and steps that you have to follow to be an active listener.
  • In this chapter we also did some key words. Listening which is the complex affective, cognitive, and behavioral processes of attending to, understanding and interpreting, and responding verbal and/or nonverbal messages. Listening style, our favored and usually unconscious approach to listening. Content oriented listeners, focus on and evaluate the facts and evidence. People oriented listeners- focus on the feelings their conversational  partners may have about what they’re saying. Action-oriented listeners- focus on the ultimate point the speaker is trying to make. Time oriented listeners- prefer brief and hurried conversations and use non verbal and verbal cues to signal that their partner needs to be more concise. Passive listening- the habitual and unconscious process of receiving messages. Active listening- the deliberate process of attending to,understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding to messages. Understanding, Accurately interpreting a message. Remembering, being able to retain and recall information later. Evaluating, the process of critically analyzing message to determine its truthfulness, utility, and trustworthiness. Responding, providing feedback.

I specifically talked about racial divides in health care and it was nice to make research on this topic. Foe example I found out that national data reveal that over the past 50 years, the health of both black and white persons has improved in the United States as evidenced by increases in life expectancy and declines in infant and adult mortality (National Center for Health Statistics, 1998). However, black persons continue to have higher rates of morbidity and mortality than white persons for most indicators of physical health. Hispanics and American Indians also have elevated disease and death rates for multiple conditions. In addition, Members of racial and ethnic minority groups have long suffered from health inequities in the United States, and the COVID-19 pandemic has mercilessly worsened many of these inequities. As of November 2021, American Indian and Alaska Native, Black, and Latino people all had suffered from higher rates of hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID-19 compared with White people. These inequities result, in large part, from racial and ethnic minority populations inequitable access to health care, which persists because of structural racism in health care policy.

Group 3 discuss about health care and education. One of the points that caught my attention was when they talked about the importance of a good healthcare structure on every country. They mentioned that social health protection and equal access to quality health care has significant positive effects on individual and public health, economic growth and development. They also talked about who controls the healthcare system. The federal agency that oversees CMS, which administers programs for protecting the health of all Americans, including Medicare, the Marketplace, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). They mentioned that regulatory agencies thus monitor individual and corporate healthcare practitioners and facilities; inform the government about changes in the way the healthcare industry operates; ensure higher safety standards; and attempt to improve healthcare quality and follow local, state, and federal guidelines.

I loved how every group used a lot of visuals to increase our understanding of their topics. Now I understand that I need to improve the pace of my speech and this can be fixed if I practice more. This is because the more time I spend reciting my speech to myself, it will help me become more comfortable speaking to the audience which will result in me being in control of my speech and the pace of the speech. Practice makes perfect.
