Reflections #2- Ajah Yearwood

Recently, my speech class did more presentations that we had to write this blog post about! This time we made presentations and brochures on Racial Divides, Economy, Law and Order Protests/Rallies, Immigration, Education, and Healthcare. Each group had two to three days to present their projects along with a chapter review and a submission of two brochures for each of their topics. In my case, another group member and I did our brochures, and we all worked together to split the chapters. We were assigned to chapters one, two, six, seven, and eight and our professor complimented it, saving it for a reference for other classes.

This time we began with group three since last time group one went first. This time their topics were Education in the pandemic and funding education. Noelia had said that the USA falls behind in grades compared to other countries but Professor Sinkoff disagreed, and they had a brief conversation about it. Afterwards, a fellow student named Noelia clarified that she meant in math and science. This group also said college could be cheaper but it is worth the price in the end due to the job possibilities. They talked about several associations, nationally and locally that help provide for schools so students are able to receive better educations.

Secondly, they talked about Healthcare in the next class. They talked about the history of healthcare, its international perspectives, why it is important to a country, who controls it, who makes healthcare laws, and how the government regulates it. I learned that there are many different types of healthcare policies, some being patient care polices, security, drug, & employee health. As we all know, the US doesn’t have free healthcare BUT I was taught that we could always get healthcare plans, like insurance, and different premiums.

Professor Sinkoff has provided commentary to this presentation, the best being “Excellent timeline. Very good information. I think we now know some of the history of our education. Very good information. Wow that Pandemic certainly did a number on children in all facets of their lives. Nice brochure with a lot of information. Both the local and National associations are really good to know. Very good!” and “Well we are still number one. Yes math and science are not our strengths. Very true the criteria of measurement is different everywhere. Very true with change in our system taking a long time. Many countries have education that appears free. Better education is always and should always be at the top of our lists. Very good segway to chapter for. Really good.”

In group three’s powerpoint, I was able to learn about education throughout the comparisons on different kinds of ways I can be covered within healthcare and the educational advantages and disadvantages I have as an American citizen.

Next, group two went since they are a solid middle ground, presenting second this and last time. In my opinion they could have done better, their information was mediocre and they filled their powerpoint with videos instead of information. I believe if they had not have done that, their presentation would come off as a lot more informational and not scrambled together.

Their topic was on Immigration and Law and Order-Protests/Rallies! They had technical difficulties with their audio but I was able to help. Their group played a really long video in the beginning, which I didn’t think was necessary since it took up half the class. Their presentation was mostly videos so I think it was just put to take up as much time possible. Though I think this, in group two’s powerpoint I was able to learn about immigration issues and solutions and some popular protests and rallies that call for people’s attention, including black and asian lives matter protests.

Professor Sinkoff has provided commentary to this presentation, some of the best being “Very good information and interview. Good choice. Very impressive people”, “Good points for the topic on the boarders”, and “Very good choice to use the American Civil Liberties Union.”

To finish things off, group one, which was my group, went last. Our powerpoint was on Racial Divides and Economy and we presented over the span of three days, starting late due to group two. On the first day we presented, Danna and I went first on our topic of “Racial divides in children and the workplace.” Professor Sinkoff had provided commentary to this presentation and gave us some good feedback, praising us on our presentations and information but the ones who presented late got point taken off their grade.

In the next few days, everyone else had went if they had not before, for reasons being those who didn’t show up to class the previous days. On the next Monday, most of my group finished up except for some people who were not in class. Their topics were racial divides in listening, racial divides in healthcare, racial divides in voting rights, economies, inflation, gas prices, and how young adults deal with economy. My group presented some good videos and most of us have really good videos and notes.

In my research for this assignment I was able to learn about discrimination and economic problems. In all aspects of the world, even when it’s not in plain sight, discrimination is an underlying disease that toxifies our humanity. This information has taught me that even though we all want to be treated equally, we’re not. I was also taught that financial and economic problems are real and affect everyone, from how much food you could buy to limiting your driving habits.

After we had finished all of the presentations, Professor SInkoff assigned our three group leaders Sofia, Kessiah, and Verkevia, to give an overview of their group’s presentation and brochure. I was able to see Kessiah and Verkevia do their summaries, both other them got good feed back but Verkevia really went above and beyond. Unfortunately, I never got to see Sofia’s summarized assignment due to her not being in class that day.
